The storm, one of the largest to hit the US since the 1950s, spread more than 2,000 miles - reaching from Texas to Maine in the North East.
Chicago was covered by 20 inches of snow, forcing firefighters to use snowmobiles to get around the city. In North Dakota, temperatures of -27C were recorded.
Officials in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Oklahoma declared a state of emergency and motorists were warned to stay off the roads.
The National Guard was deployed to help rescue stranded drivers, but the National Weather Service warned the extreme conditions may prevent any further rescues.
Train services between New York and Philadelphia were cancelled with more than 6,300 scheduled flights grounded in the affected area.
In Texas, the weather forced rolling blackouts, leaving three million people without electricity.
Authorities have brought in extra power from Mexico in order to meet demand.
